Atul K. Madan, MD, FACS, FASMBS, has become a nationally recognized expert in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery and has been an integral part of developing new surgical techniques and training future surgeons for over 15 years. Board-certified by the American Board of Surgery, Dr. Madan has performed over 3,000 complex laparoscopic gastric bypasses and hundreds of revisional bariatric surgery procedures during his surgical career.
Dr. Madan completed his residency in Memphis, where he became the first surgeon to perform a laparoscopic gastric bypass in the city, and then later went on to perform the first laparoscopic gastric bypass in the world on a patient who underwent a liver transplant. Dr. Madan has held various leadership roles, including Chief of the Minimally Invasive Surgery Program at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and the Laparoendoscopic and Bariatric Surgery Division Chief at the University of Miami Health System.
He established training programs of excellence for Minimally Invasive Surgery and Bariatric Surgery, secured funding for Fellowships, and established Centers of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Surgery and Bariatric Surgery. Dr. Madan has contributed to the field through numerous avenues, including publishing over 175 peer-reviewed articles and numerous book chapters and giving lectures around the globe.
