About Aldona J. Spiegel, MD

Aldona J. Spiegel, MD, is a world-renowned plastic and reconstructive microsurgeon who specializes in innovative techniques in breast reconstruction. In addition to being the Director of the Center for Breast Restoration, she is the Chief of Surgical Innovation at Houston Methodist Hospital.

Dr. Spiegel received her medical degree from the University of Ottawa, then went on to train in general surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital, and finished her plastic surgery residency and microsurgery fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine. Under the mentorship of Dr. Robert J. Allen, the original developer of DIEP flap reconstruction, Dr. Spiegel was among the first surgeons in Houston to routinely use this innovative surgical procedure.

Dr. Spiegel’s surgical interests include muscle-sparing perforator flaps (DIEP, SIEA, SGAP, TUG, TAP), vascularized lymph node transfer for lymphedema, and prepectoral direct-to-implant reconstruction. She is also an international resource in breast reconstruction procedures that restore sensation to the breast following mastectomy.

As an enthusiastic innovator, surgeon, educator, and learner, she devises new surgical approaches, pilots and designs medical devices that can improve patient care, and mentors and educates surgeons all over the world. Dr. Spiegel is not just an innovator and surgeon; she is also very passionate about patients’ rights and advocacy- promoting women’s autonomy to make correct decisions for themselves and their choice of reconstruction after breast cancer surgery. She is the founder of The Pink Sisters, a support group for women who are exploring their journey through breast reconstruction.
