Since 1994, Dr. Anita P. Courcoulas has been a respected board-certified surgeon and recognized national expert in both bariatrics and metabolic surgery. Throughout her lengthy academic and clinical careers, Dr. Courcoulas has contributed towards the development of surgical treatments for obesity, type 2 diabetes, and related metabolic diseases.
Dr. Courcoulas completed her undergraduate studies at Brown University with a Bachelor of Science degree, followed by earning her Doctor of Medicine from the Boston University School of Medicine. In addition, she completed her general surgical residency at UPMC Medical Education, Pittsburgh, gaining extensive training and experience in minimally invasive and bariatric surgical procedures. Dr. Courcoulas holds a valid Pennsylvania medical licence and holds a certification from the American Board Of Surgery.
Throughout her professional career, Dr. Courcoulas has been an important participant in major clinical research initiatives investigating long-term bariatric surgical clinical outcomes. Dr. Courcoulas has played an important role in landmark projects such as the Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery (LABS) and Teen-LABS, both of which assess the safety and effectiveness of metabolic surgery in adults and adolescents as well as evaluate the health benefits received from metabolic surgery. Dr. Courcoulas’ research has been extensively published in peer-reviewed professional journals, providing much-needed evidence regarding weight loss outcomes, diabetes control, and reduction in cardiovascular risk.
