About Dr. Allen Alvarez, MD

Dr. Allen Alvarez, MD is a board-certified General Surgeon who has completed a fellowship in Minimally Invasive Surgery and Bariatric Surgery and is recognized for his highly advanced level of expertise in both laparoscopic and robotic surgery. He is committed to helping his patients achieve healthier lives through proper surgical interventions for obesity and other obesity-related problems.

Prior to becoming a physician, Dr. Alvarez worked as a paramedic, where he provided emergency medical services in the field. He then obtained his Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of the Incarnate Word and practiced as a Registered Nurse in several Emergency Departments across the nation: San Antonio, Honolulu, Maui, Miami, and Brownsville, Texas. These experiences provided him with a great deal of practical experience with patient care prior to entering medical school.

Dr. Alvarez graduated from Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara with his medical degree, where he was first in his class. He completed his General Surgery Residency at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Greenwich Village, New York City. He served as the Chief Resident there and received a great deal of experience in Trauma Surgery, Vascular Surgery, and Acute Care Surgery. After finishing his residency, Dr. Alvarez returned to Texas to train with the well-known laparoscopic surgeon, Dr. Morris Franklin, in order to develop his laparoscopic skills.
