About Dr. Ali Tavakkolizadeh

Dr. Ali Tavakkolizadeh, MD, FRCS, is an expert in general and gastrointestinal surgery, having completed extensive training and residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. He serves as the Chief of the Division of General/ Gastrointestinal Surgery; Co-Director of the Center for Weight Management and Wellness; and Director of the Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship program.

Dr. Tavakkolizadeh received his medical degree from The London Hospital Medical College in the UK, before becoming a Fellow at the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) and relocating to the United States. He completed his general surgery residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, as well as completing the Harvard Advanced Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship (training).

In addition to his surgical practice, Dr. Tavakkolizadeh has initiated an active research program that is focused on evaluating how metabolic mechanisms influence the resolution of diabetes mellitus following Gastric Bypass Surgery. Specifically, he is investigating how alterations in gastrointestinal metabolism, as well as changes to portal blood flow following Gastric Bypass Surgery, might lead to more desirable outcomes (less surgical intervention) in patients undergoing bariatric surgery, but still obtaining similar metabolic benefits to those receiving bariatric procedures.
