About Dr. Aley El-Din Tohamy

Dr. Aley El-Din Tohamy is a general and bariatric surgeon who is board-certified in general surgery. He is currently the Chair of the Department of Surgery at MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center and has a vast amount of experience in the areas of minimally invasive surgical procedures, robotic surgery (primarily), bariatric surgical procedures, and general surgical procedures.

The area in which Dr. Tohamy developed his greatest expertise while at MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center is in advanced laparoscopic techniques and hernia and complex hernia repairs. His focus on laparoscopic/bariatric surgical procedures and the treatment of patients suffering from metabolic syndrome leads to successful outcomes for patients struggling with obesity, diabetes, hypertension, obstructive sleep apnea, and hiatal hernias.

Dr. Tohamy operates on multiple abdominal organs, including performing multiple and bariatric surgeries (i.e., weight loss surgery), reconstructive abdominal wall surgery, gallbladder surgery, and colon and small intestine surgeries, to name a few. He utilizes robotic and minimally invasive techniques, such as laparoscopic, to maximize the ability to perform the surgery with higher levels of precision, decreased postoperative pain, and quicker postoperative recovery for the patient.
