About Dr. Alexander D. Abkin, MD

Dr. Alexander Abkin, MD, FACS, is a bariatric/general surgeon who has a specialty in the area of weight-loss surgery. He has been board-certified since 1997 and has a large number of bariatric procedures (gastric band surgery, vertical sleeve gastrectomy, gastric/sleeve bypass, and revision) under his belt. He has an extensive amount of expertise as well as an ongoing commitment to innovation; he completes six to eight bariatric surgeries every week at an MBSAQIP-accredited center.

In addition to the above, Dr. Abkin has had a large influence on the evolution of bariatric surgery in America. In 1999, he became one of the first to use laparoscopic gastric bypass in New Jersey. In 2001, he introduced the LAP-BAND procedure in his practice. In 2007, Dr. Abkin became the first physician in the Northeast to utilize the REALIZE Band and was one of only 30 surgeons in the entire United States to train other doctors on the use of this band.

In 2009, he became the first surgeon in the Northeastern United States to use Single Incision Gastric Bypass and was one of the early adopters of the ReShape intragastric balloon after its FDA approval in 2015. Dr. Abkin is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
