Dr. Alexander Barkan is a general surgeon in Staten Island who specializes in longer bariatric surgeries, colon and rectal operations and minimally invasive procedures. He has extensive experience in treating complex problems such as morbid obesity, esophageal and stomach cancer, and other gastrointestinal diseases using advanced surgical techniques.
He received his MD from the St. George’s University School of Medicine and did his internal medicine internship at Drexel University College of Medicine/Hahnemann University Hospital. He also completed general surgery residencies at Drexel University College of Medicine/Hahnemann University Hospital and Maimonides Medical Center and gained a complete knowledge of general and specialty surgical care.
His clinical experience includes minimally invasive gastrointestinal surgery, bariatric surgery, colorectal surgery, head and neck cancer, and microvascular reconstruction. Dr. Barkan has also contributed to medical research through his publications, including topics on paraesophageal hiatal hernia repair and antibiotic prophylaxis for bariatric surgery. Dr. Barkan is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Fellow of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. He is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery.
