About Dr. Adolfo Z. Fernandez

The board-certified general surgeon Dr. Adolfo Z. Fernandez Jr, M.D., successfully performs bariatric and minimally invasive surgeries in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He graduated from the Duke University School of Medicine in 1997 and completed his residency in General Surgery with the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System in 2002.

Dr. Fernandez specializes in both Bariatric Surgery and General Surgery; he also focuses on Gastroenterology with an interest in minimally invasive surgical options. Dr. Fernandez has authored or contributed to a number of peer-reviewed clinical studies published in prestigious medical journals worldwide, including participating in clinical studies related to the Multivitamin Adherence Following Bariatric Surgery Clinical Trial.

Dr. Fernandez has conducted research related to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality and the cost of healthcare delivery after bariatric surgery. He has also conducted research regarding the surgical treatment of complex Gastroparesis cases. This is a further demonstration of Dr. Fernandez’s commitment to improving patient care and increasing surgical success through continuing research and evidence-based medical practices.

Dr. Fernandez is an American College of Surgeons Fellow and is licensed to practice in North Carolina, and in 2012 received his certificate as a CMS Meaningful Use Stage 1 Provider for his outstanding use of Electronic Health Records.
