At UCSF Medical Centre, Dr Andrew M. Posselt is one of the preeminent bariatric and transplant surgeons in the United States and the Director of the Pancreatic Islet Transplantation Program. He also practices adult and pediatric renal, liver and pancreas transplantation in addition to laparoscopic, robotic and open bariatric surgery. In 2023, he was the first surgeon at UCSF to perform a robotic nephrectomy for living donation and thus has further established UCSF as a leader in the field of minimally invasive transplant care.
Dr Posselt earned both his medical degree and PhD in immunology at the University of Pennsylvania. After completing his residencies in Internal Medicine and General Surgery at UCSF and a Transplant Surgery Fellowship, he joined the faculty at UCSF in 2003. A certified Board member in both Internal Medicine and Surgery, Dr Posselt has developed a reputation as having outstanding technical skill and an unwavering commitment to conducting research which promotes the advancement of transplant science.
His research interests include pancreatic islet transplantation in patients with Type 1 Diabetes, transplant immunology, and metabolic outcomes after bariatric surgery. The work he does is primarily directed towards finding more treatment options that will provide greater long-term improvement in the quality of life of patients suffering from diabetes or end-stage organ failure.
In addition to being an active educator and mentor, Dr Posselt trains UCSF residents and fellows in Transplant and General Surgery and serves on a number of professional society boards; he is often invited to present at these meetings regarding transfusion and transplant innovations.
