Dr. Andrew M. Averbach is a general and bariatric surgeon board-certified by the American Board of Surgery. Dr Averbach is currently practicing surgeries at Ascension Saint Agnes in Catonsville, Maryland. Since joining the Saint Agnes Surgical Team in 2002, Dr Averbach has not only been an innovator in weight loss surgeries but also has greatly helped patients reclaim their health and ultimately their lives. The Saint Agnes Center for Bariatric Surgery is recognized as one of the most advanced and busiest centers in Maryland, and Dr Averbach’s contributions were a key factor in achieving this designation. Additionally, Dr Averbach played a key role in developing the Saint Agnes Center’s Bariatric Program, which is now designated as a “Center of Excellence” by the ASMBS/ACS Bariatric Credentialing Network.
Born in Moscow, Russia, Dr. Averbach received his medical degree from N. Pirogov State Medical School and completed his research at the Hertzen Cancer Research Institute while completing his surgical residency. After immigrating to the United States in 1992, he completed a Gastrointestinal Clinical Research Fellowship at the Washington Cancer Institute (Washington Hospital Center).
Dr Averbach’s clinical expertise includes Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, vertical sleeve gastrectomy, and revisional bariatric surgeries. He is also an expert in advanced laparoscopic surgery for gastroesophageal reflux disease, paraesophageal hernia, and hiatal hernia. Dr. Averbach’s high level of attention to detail, combined with his understanding of compassionate care, allows him to develop individualized patient-focused treatment plans that take into account the individual’s needs, goals, and long-term success. Dr. Averbach has extensive experience in surgical care.
