About Andres E. Castellanos

Dr. Andres E. Castellanos was a highly respected surgeon who specialized in the area of surgery known as “Bariatric Surgery”. This type of surgery includes such things as minimally invasive surgery and robotic surgery. He graduated from the University of Zulia Medical School in Maracaibo, Venezuela, with a medical degree and then continued his residency (in Surgery) in the United States following completion of a Transitional Internship at Frankford Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Following his Transitional Internship, he completed his surgical training at MCP Hahnemann/Drexel University by completing a full general surgery residency program as well as a research fellowship in robotic & minimally invasive surgery.

Dr. Castellanos has established a remarkable reputation as an attending surgeon and assistant professor at Drexel University College of Medicine for his contributions to the field of bariatrics through his clinical practice involving the use of advanced techniques in surgery. Many of the procedures he performed were aimed at treating obesity, hernia repair and surgical treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease. Dr. Castellanos relied heavily on the use of advanced laparoscopic techniques, robotic surgery and minimally invasive surgery in order to create better patient outcomes, shorter recovery times and improved long-term outcomes for patients seeking safe and effective options for managing their weight.

Dr. Castellanos served as the Associate Professor in general surgery and as the Executive Vice Chairman for the Department of Surgery. In addition, Dr. Castellanos served as the program director for General Surgery Residency and has received numerous awards for his contribution to Surgical education over the years. Because of his role as an educator, as well as his professionalism and commitment towards advancing the field of Bariatric Surgery, Dr. Castellanos has made an immense impact on his patients’ lives, as well as on the academic surgical community.
