About Andrew Luhrs, MD

The Center for Medical and Surgical Weight Loss in Providence, Rhode Island, has Dr. Andrew R. Luhrs as a board-certified metabolic and surgical bariatric surgeon, assistant professor of surgery at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. His primary area of focus is general surgery with a specialty in weight management, as well as surgical procedures for the treatment of foregut and hernias, using advanced laparoscopic and minimally invasive strategies in an effort to provide the highest possible patient outcomes when performing these surgeries.

Dr. Luhrs received his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine, completing his residency in general surgery at Rhode Island Hospital/Brown University and then pursuing a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery and bariatric surgery at Duke University Medical Center. He has extensive experience in revisional (or “second”) bariatric surgeries, and complex hernia repairs (multiple hernias or very large hernias), as well as surgical procedures dealing with gastrointestinal issues that are related to obesity.

Dr. Luhrs also has a strong interest in research and health care equity. He studies outcomes after patients undergo bariatric surgery and has examined differences in access to care based on socioeconomic status. In addition to being a surgeon, Dr. Luhrs is dedicated to social justice and has begun a nonprofit organization helping to support the education of hundreds of rural children in India.

Dr. Luhrs is very well known for his compassionate manner when interacting with his patients, devoting time to understanding the goals and challenges each patient faces, incorporating their input into the surgical plan to ensure that they receive the safest, most effective method of achieving long-term health. Dr. Luhrs is extremely passionate about surgical excellence and advocating for the needs of his patients.
