As one of the international leaders in bariatric surgery and minimally invasive surgery, Dr. Alan A. Saber, MD, FACS, is recognized for his clinical innovation, contribution in academia, and leadership of metabolic surgery programs throughout his career. He has been Director of the Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery Program at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center since 2018.
Dr. Saber earned an MD with honors from Alexandria University School of Medicine in Egypt. His surgical training began in Egypt (Alexandria University), and he completed his general surgical residency at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York. He completed his clinical fellowship in advanced laparoscopic and bariatric surgical techniques at the Cleveland Clinic Florida.
Dr. Saber has over 18 years of experience as a bariatric surgeon and has performed over 4,000 minimally invasive weight loss surgeries, such as laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy and revisional bariatric surgery. Dr. Saber was formerly the Clinical Professor of Surgery and Chief of Minimally Invasive Surgery at The Brooklyn Hospital Center/Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and has held positions of leadership at Case Western Reserve University and Michigan State University.
