Dr. Alexander Onopchenko is a highly skilled general and bariatric surgeon who works out of Atlantic County, New Jersey. He graduated with honors (cum laude) in Biology from Ursinus College in 1979 before attending the Medical College of Pennsylvania, where he completed his MD with distinction (honors) in 1984. He then completed a General Surgery residency at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in 1989 and has practiced as a surgeon in the Atlantic County area ever since.
Dr. Onopchenko is a board-certified Surgeon and was elected a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons; he is also a member of the American Society of Bariatric Surgery, the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons and the Society for Abdominal and Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES). He has served in leadership roles on numerous medical boards, including as Past President of both the Medical Society of New Jersey and the Medical Staff at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center.
Dr. Onopchenko is recognized as a pioneer in minimally invasive surgery; he was one of the first surgeons to perform laparoscopic cholecystectomies in Atlantic County and has extensive experience in performing laparoscopic appendectomies, hernia repairs, anti-reflux surgery, gastric and colon surgery and adrenal surgery, among other procedures. In 2002, he opened the Center for Surgical Weight Loss Wellness at AtlantiCare, where he has performed thousands of laparoscopic bariatric procedures.
