About Dr. Alan Richard Abando, MD

Dr. Alan R. Abando is an internationally recognized and respected leader in the field of advanced laparoscopic & bariatric surgery. He specializes in providing minimally invasive surgical care to his patients so they can return to their normal daily activities sooner and with better long-term results. He is a board-certified surgeon who possesses the skill and expertise required to provide you with high-quality surgical care.

Dr. Abando earned his medical doctorate at Rush Medical College in Chicago, where he graduated at the top of his class. He completed his general surgical residency at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, CA, affiliated with the University of Southern California, where he trained extensively in all facets of minimally invasive surgical techniques. He has also practiced as both an advanced laparoscopic and bariatric surgeon at Huntington Memorial Hospital prior to moving to the Austin area. He currently serves on the teaching faculty of the surgical residency program to train future generations of surgeons.

Dr. Abando has a passion for all aspects of advanced laparoscopic surgery. He has extensive experience performing advanced laparoscopic procedures such as laparoscopic colectomy, ventral hernia repair, inguinal hernia repair, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, and laparoscopic gastric bypass.

Dr. Abando is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery (ABS) and is a Fellow (FACS) member of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). He has participated in many professional organizations, including the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons (ASMBS), American College of Surgeons, and American Medical Society.
