Dr. Alexander Ranjit Aurora, MD, MSc, is a board-certified surgeon who specializes in bariatric and general (general) surgery. He is a minimally invasive surgeon who performs weight-loss surgeries and is the Director of the Advanced Minimally Invasive Surgery and Bariatrics Program at the University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center. Dr. Aurora has been a member of the surgical staff at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center since 2011.
Dr. Aurora treats many types of abdominal disorders, including hernias, gallbladder disease and colon cancer; however, he has a particular emphasis on performing bariatric surgeries for the treatment of obesity. The majority (greater than 95%) of the procedures Dr. Aurora performs are laparoscopic. Patients can expect to suffer less pain, have a more rapid recovery and have an improved surgical outcome from laparoscopic surgery. Types of operations Dr. Aurora performs include ventral hernia repair, inguinal hernia repair, and hiatal hernia repair, cholecystectomy, colon resections, and various types of bariatric surgery. He is also the only surgeon in the Greater Baltimore area who performs all of the upper endoscopies and colonoscopies himself as part of his comprehensive approach to patient care.
Dr. Aurora graduated from the University of Lausanne, Faculty of Medicine, with a medical degree and completed his general surgery residency at Sinai Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland. He is board-certified in surgery by the American Board of Surgery and is licensed to practice medicine in the state of Maryland. Dr. Aurora has participated in numerous surgical research projects, including examining the outcomes of bariatric surgeries.
