About Dr. Alfredo Fernandez, MD

A board-certified general surgeon and an advanced laparoscopic surgeon with experience in providing clinical care for obese patients through weight loss surgery, Dr. Alfredo Fernandez has been practicing for more than 20 years and has earned a solid reputation as a surgeon offering high-quality surgical care as well as assisting his patients in maintaining their long-term success through weight loss and improved health.

Dr. Fernandez obtained his Bachelor’s of Science in Chemistry from the University of Miami in 1976, and his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Universidad Nacional Pedro Henriques Urena in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, in 1981. He completed his surgical residency at the Alton Ochsner Medical Foundation in New Orleans, Louisiana, where he graduated at the top of his class in 1986.

Throughout his career, Dr. Fernandez has received numerous awards and accolades for his work and knowledge of advanced laparoscopic and bariatric surgery. In addition, the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and the Surgical Review Corporation have given him full-term “Centers of Excellence” status for bariatric surgery. Dr. Fernandez also has had a 5-star rating on Healthgrades due to his outstanding commitment to the care of his patients. Dr. Fernandez has been treating patients in the Tampa Bay Area for over 27 years and currently serves as the Medicine Director for the Brandon Regional Hospital in Brandon, Florida. He has completed over 4,000 bariatric surgical procedures.
