About Albert H. Chao, MD

Dr. Albert H. Chao is a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon affiliated with Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and Nationwide Children’s Hospital. He has a particular interest in plastic surgery with a subspecialty in microsurgery that entails reconstructive surgery with the patient’s own tissues to reconstruct defects, treat complex conditions such as lymphedema and nerve pain, and restore form and function through a tailored, multidisciplinary approach.

Dr. Chao earned an MD in medicine from the University of Chicago and completed his plastic surgery residency at Washington University in St. Louis, followed by a microsurgery fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center. He is a Full Professor and Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs in the Department of Plastic Surgery, and previously served as the Director of the Microsurgery Fellowship program.

For more than a decade ago since he became an attending surgeon, Dr. Chao has had a mission to improve patient care through his practice, research, and teaching. His research focuses on surgical outreach in low and middle-income countries, the sustainability of training surgeons from other countries, and clinical research that has consequences in patient care. He has an extensive career in publishing in the literature and works toward advancement in the field of reconstructive surgery.

Dr. Chao is an American College of Surgeons Fellow (FACS) and a member of the American Association of Plastic Surgeons and is on the editorial boards of the two journals, Microsurgery and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. Chao was recognized as a Top Doctor by Castle Connolly for all years 2020-2024 and demonstrated a commitment to patient care, education, and global surgery service during those years.
