About Amber Leis, MD

As a plastic surgeon and hand surgeon, Dr. Amber Leis is a member of the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Her area of expertise includes peripheral nerve injuries and brachial plexus injuries in both children and adults, as well as performing surgical procedures on the hands of patients from infancy through adulthood. Dr. Leis currently practices at Washington University in St. Louis, where she is recognized both nationally and internationally for her expertise, leadership, and dedication to advancing surgical education.

Dr. Leis received her medical degree from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She completed her residency in plastic surgery at Loma Linda University Medical Center, and then completed a fellowship in advanced hand surgery at the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California (USC). After completing the fellowship, Dr. Leis worked for 10 years at the University of California, Irvine, where she served as the division chief for plastic hand surgery. During that time, she was also the residency program director.

In addition to her publication record, Dr. Leis currently has over three dozen articles on the subject of brachial plexus injury, including brachial plexus nerve compression, targeted muscle reinnervation, Dupuytren’s contracture, microsurgical techniques, and many other fields. With respect to her research, Dr. Leis has obtained support from external funding agencies for innovative therapies and has also published extensively in prominent peer-reviewed journals that focus on the surgical field and related disciplines.

Dr. Leis has earned certifications in hand surgery and plastic surgery and has been an active participant in numerous professional associations on a national level. Dr. Leis is currently on the council of several educational organizations; she was a founding member of the PREPPED program and is currently an oral board examiner for the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the Plastic Surgery Foundation. Dr. Leis continues to play an integral role in shaping both the future directions of the profession and providing mentorship for upcoming surgeons in the fields of hand surgery and peripheral nerve surgery.
